New Guinea Gas Is Go
Major LNG provider Exxon Mobil announces “New Guinea Gas Is Go.” The recent $US15 billion ($A16.46 billion) approval of the Exxon Mobil Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project has created a lot of interest, hope and expectation in the Cairns region. Cairns business groups believe Cairns is well placed to service this and other upcoming PNG LNG giants.
The reality may be quite different. These LNG companies and their major subcontractors are global players with defined prequalification standards and procedures. Unless our local companies here in Far North Queensland demonstrate their ability to meet these expectations then these corporations will not hesitate to utilise other less cost effective locations. A failure to meet their standards and procedures is a risk to their corporate reputation and their business.
Companies that sit back and wait until they have received a request for tender will have already missed the boat. Compliance to these standards requires robust operational management systems that have gone through a process of design, implementation and training delivery and continuous improvement…not something you whip up overnight.
The secret to making this a sustainable exercise in business improvement is to implement intuitive solutions targeted at the right level for the size of the business. In this way small businesses can behave and think like big businesses and still produce cost effective high quality results.
